About the Meeting

Dear Colleagues:

On behalf of the India Eye Research Group (IERG), may we welcome to Asia-ARVO 2009! While the actual dates of the meeting are Thursday-Sunday, January 15-18, 2009, we urge you to come over to India a week ahead, and if that is not possible, stay a week more after the meeting. This would let you visit active eye research centers in Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Madurai and other places. High quality clinical and basic research work that goes on at these places will give you a chance for possible collaboration.

May we also request you to come to Hyderabad at least two days earlier, or stay two days after the meeting? This will give you the opportunity not only to attend some exciting Pre and Post-Conference Symposia (details will follow in the next a few weeks), but also to visit a Center of Excellence in Eye Care Delivery, namely the LV Prasad Eye Institute at Hyderabad (your local host institution), and also one of its many satellites, a secondary eye care center, situated in a rural town about 2 hours away from Hyderabad. Visits to these places will give you a good idea of how high quality eye care can be delivered in an efficient and successful fashion, with active community participation. For more details on these tours, please contact the Registration desk.

Each venue has its unique attractions and signature. We all enjoyed and admired the way in which the great city- state of Singapore has catapulted itself into a great and modern nation. Hyderabad is a city where tradition of 400 years fuses seamlessly with the Tomorrow of information technology, biotechnology and drug discovery. While you will get to see some of the latter, there are some great sights to see as well, and also some excellent art galleries and great food. Coming a couple of days ahead, or staying later, will thus be useful for you and your companions. 

While Asia-ARVO 2009 follows much of the time-tested program of earlier ones, it also adds some new ones. Clinical Science will be emphasized a bit more, as also Community Eye Health. In addition, Special Interest Groups meet on Wednesday 14 January 2009, and you might be interested in several of these.
